Background

Liranz Limited was engaged to conduct a comprehensive IT Infrastructure Assessment and develop a forward-looking IT Advancement Vision for a prominent African educational and research institute. The client is widely recognized for its work in peace and security studies, policy dialogue, post-conflict reconstruction, and governance research across the continent. Since its establishment in 2007, the institute has served as a leading hub for accredited education, professional training, and African-led thought leadership in conflict prevention and peacebuilding.

Its mandate includes advancing research, fostering academic exchange, and promoting innovative, Africa-centered solutions to address governance challenges, human security threats, and socio-economic issues that impact sustainable peace.

Technology Challenge

Like many institutions around the world, this research institute faced unprecedented challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. The sudden shift toward digital operations created both opportunities and operational constraints:

Opportunities that Emerged

  • Reduced overhead costs
  • Expanded global outreach via virtual platforms
  • Increased participation in learning, research, and policy dialogues
  • Enhanced accessibility for local and international stakeholders

Challenges Revealed

However, the rapid digital adoption also exposed underlying weaknesses in their IT environment, including:

  • Outdated IT infrastructure
  • Limited digital systems integration
  • Insufficient remote-working capability
  • Gaps in cybersecurity measures
  • Lack of a structured digital transformation framework
  • Inefficient data management processes
  • Minimal automation of academic and administrative workflows

Although digitization improved aspects of their operations, the Client recognized the need for a strategic, long-term IT modernization plan that aligns with their growing mandate and evolving digital demands.

Project Mandate

Liranz Limited was tasked to:

  • Conduct a holistic IT Infrastructure Assessment across the institute
  • Evaluate the current digital capacity, systems, hardware, and workflows
  • Identify pain points, risks, and opportunities for improvement
  • Develop a robust IT Advancement Vision to guide the institute’s digital transformation
  • Provide actionable recommendations on technologies, platforms, security, governance, and implementation pathways

This assessment and transformation roadmap would enable the institute to enhance its research output, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen its leadership role in peace and security education.
